Weather Update - More Rain on the Way

We have been witnessing a lot of rain during the past two days which has resulted in waterlogged streets, and added miseries to the residents of Dhaka. 

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Dhaka has seen approximately 82mm of rainfall on July 20, 2020.

As of 3pm on July 21, 2020 a total rainfall of 47mm has already been recorded. 

The rainfall is not over yet - according to BMD,  light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely to continue throughout the rest of the day with south/south-westerly winds of 10-15kph and wind gusts of up to 25-35kph. 

The Weather Network is forecasting that heavy rainfall is likely to continue throughout Wednesday (July 22) and well in to Thursday (July 23). According to the forecast, the rainfall is expected to taper off starting Thursday, July 23, 2020.

Doel Chattar

  The Doel Chattar (aka The Doel Square) is a sculpture of our National Bird, the oriental magpie-robin, locally known as the Doel. It is a popular place for shopping traditional Bangladeshi handicrafts made of bamboo, wood, jute and pottery. Bibi Mariam: the Cannon of Dhaka

The Canon which used to sit at the corner of Gulistan, was a landmark which is remembered by many still. The younger generation have not had the opportunity to see it as often as the older generation. As it is now placed at the entrance of Osmani Uddyan, Ramna, Dhaka. This cannon was built by local technicians on the order of Mir Jumla II, who was appointed as Governor of Bengal by Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb. He ordered two cannons to be built named Bibi Marium and Kale Jamjam also known as Kale Khan. One was given a female name and the other a male. They were placed both sides of the Buriganga Riverin Swarighat in front of 'Barakatra' and the other on a sandbar near Jinjira. They were placed there to defend Dhaka's waterfront from frequent attacks of the Mogh and Arakan pirates.  Jumla took both of these cannons when he attacked Assam.
