No one really knows how Dhaka came to be named so. The origin of the name is uncertain. Some say it is called Dhaka because the area had dhak trees also known as flame of the forest. It bears a flower which is flame red called polash.
Then again some say the name Dhaka refers to the hidden goddess Dhakeshwari, whose temple is situated in the southern-west part of the city in Bakshi Bazar, Dhakeshwari Road.

Another theory states that Dhaka refers to a an instrument made with a membrane made of hide, which was played by order of the Subhadar Islam Khan, during the inauguration of the capital of Bengal in 1610.
